In just two years, the small town of Eldorado Park in Johannesburg has experienced so much success. First, Liesl Laurie is crowned Miss South Africa in 2015 and then, this year, Mahalia Buchanan is nominated for a South African Music Award in 2016, proving that this is a small town with big talent.
Mahalia Buchanan is a well-seasoned woman of God, a dynamic worshiper, songwriter, a minister of the Gospel, entrepreneur , and a TV presenter. Foremost on her list of accolades is her contribution to the internationally recognized gospel group, Joyous celebration and of course having the opportunity to present on one of South Africa’s most popular gospel channels, ‘Gospel Truth’. Mahalia Buchanan is a woman who pursues God’s purpose relentlessly.
Currently on tour with her debut album ‘Redeemed to worship’ , Mahalia took the time out of her busy schedule to answer a few of my questions:
At what age did you accept the Lord Jesus Christ into your life? Please describe this life- altering event.
“By the time I was born, my whole family had accepted Jesus. I grew up in a God-centered family. I made the decision to accept Jesus at the age of 13, as Lord over my life”.
You are known to be an anointed worshiper in the Kingdom of God. What does worship mean to you?
“Firstly let me say, I Love God so much and that basically is the foundation from where it all starts. The bible says in Psalm eight, “who are we that you are so mindful of us?”, just imagine such a great God who is all supreme, chooses us daily, just think about that.🏽He deserves to be magnified and I worship Him simply because He is God, not just because of what He can do for me, but simply because He is God”.
You were a worship leader in the internationally recognized gospel group, Joyous Celebration. What did that feel like?
“Joyous Celebration has always been a dream for me and when the opportunity came for me to be a part of the team, it was so overwhelming. The amount of growth on that stage and platform will forever impact my life. It has prepared me for my solo career”.
You have released your own album ‘Redeemed to worship’, what are some of the experiences that inspired this album?
“Finally after so much hard work and building my brand in the music industry, I’m so grateful that it happened at this time. I wanted to speak about the sacrifice Jesus made for us. How free we are and how grateful we should be for His Grace, and about how God is able to turn around every situation that is against us living in the purpose of God for our lives.so I wanted the songs to remind you just how much you are loved by God as we celebrate Redemption”.
Describe yourself in one sentence.
I’m resilient, tenacious, a believer, hard-worker,who always strives to live in Gods best”.
As a young woman, in a world full of compromise how have you managed to stay grounded?
“My Family. We can choose friends but not family, they will remind you of who you really are, and serve as a base of support for you always. They love you constantly, whether you’re doing good or not so good. Whether you’re popular or not so popular, they love the real you”.
List three things which you feel needs to be on top of every worship leader’s priority list.
- A relationship with God
- Read about worship in the bible, especially the Levites role during those times.
- Equip yourself for your ministry, listen to Gospel music.
What are you currently working on/busy with?
“My Tour which has been so amazing and by Gods grace, successful. We have reached our objectives and we are so grateful. Also establishing my business in Interior. I have also just co-created a show called Destiny of which I’m the presenter as well on One Gospel, every Monday evening at 7pm on channel 331″.
Any advice for young Christian women?
“Jesus is the best decision you can make for your life, don’t ever doubt it. Look after yourself and guard what is dear to you. Be a lady of purpose, pursue purpose overall. Work hard and believe in yourself”.
